The Stratux is arguably the best value ADS-B receiver on the market, delivering everything a pilot needs at a very attractive price point.

Taking into account its features, price point, and reliability, it’s no surprise that it is the most popular ADS-B receiver and is praised by practically every pilot who has used it.

You can expect to get 5-6 hours of continuous operation out of the Stratux ADS-B, which should be sufficient for most flights. As the battery pack is removable, you can also thankfully pack a spare in your flight bag.

The battery is recharged using the included micro-USB cable, which can be done at home plugged into the wall.

Connecting to your favorite aviation tablet or phone is simple and achieved through WiFi. You also have the option of syncing multiple Android, iPad, and iPhone devices at the same time.

Once connected you can get real-time regional and continental NEXRAD radar imagery directly from the National Weather Service and through FIS-B services. NOTAMs, METARs, AIR/SIGMETs, TAFs, PIREPs, winds/temps aloft, and other crucial in-flight weather services can all be accessed too.

Furthermore, the Wide Area Augmentation GPS is highly accurate – within 2.5m in fact – to ensure that you are always kept on course.

In short, the Stratux provides highly accurate ADS-B traffic and weather information, as well as navigation GPS position thanks to its internal WAAS GPS receiver.

The Stratux is compatible with more or less every electronic flight bag that a pilot is ever likely to use, including:

  • ForeFlight
  • FlyQ EFB
  • Navigator
  • AvNav
  • WingX
  • Avare EFB
  • FltPlan Go
  • DroidEFB
  • AerovieReports
  • Avplan EFB
  • iFly GPS
  • OzRunways EFB

The built-in Attitude-Heading Reference System (AHRS) syncs your pitch, yaw, roll, and aircraft acceleration data between each EFB listed.

Customer Support

The Stratux is available as a DIY kit but we recommend that you buy from Crew Dog Electronics on Amazon. They professionally assemble and test each unit while also offering excellent customer support in the event you have an issue or otherwise need any help.

Even if you consider yourself quite handy, the peace of mind a professionally assembled and tested unit brings is well worth the added cost, in our opinion.

Other Features

The Stratux also includes a fan controller to avoid overheating; a suction mount for secure attachment, a microSD card that is preloaded with the latest Stratux software, as well as a strap and case.

Stratux ADS-B vs. Garmin GDL 50 vs. GDL 52

The Stratux certainly holds its own against the more expensive Garmin GDL 50 and GDL 52, though depending on your needs they may be the better choice.

The GDL 52 has a similar battery performance to the Stratux, providing 5-6 hours of continuous operation, but the GDL 50 is a real powerhouse and provides up to 8 hours of continuous operation.

With the Garmin devices, you get a couple of very useful features such as TerminalTraffic that shows which aircraft trajectories are most likely to converge with your own. You can receive ADS-B position reports directly from other aircraft too.

One real benefit of buying the Garmin GDL 52, in particular, is that you get SiriusXM weather and radio, which is worth the added expense of the GDL 52 for many pilots.
