Applying for a student pilot certificate is an exciting step as you get started on your journey to becoming a pilot.
While it can take some time for a permanent student pilot certificate to arrive in the mail, the good news is that a temporary certificate can be issued much more quickly, ensuring that you waste no time and can get started as soon as possible.
How can I apply for a temporary student pilot certificate?
The application process first requires you to register with IACRA. Once you have done this, you can begin filling out the application form, answering the questions they ask you.
However, while you can get started with the application process you will need to meet with a Certified Flight Instructor to successfully submit your application.
The Certified Flight Instructor, also known as a Recommending Instructor (RI) in IACRA, will:
- Verify that you meet minimum Student Age requirements
- Verify your identity and enter your ID information
- Verify your English Language Proficiency
- Verify that you have reviewed the Privacy Act and the Pilot Bill of Rights
You will then electronically sign the Pilot’s Bill of Rights Acknowledgment and the Student Pilot application. The final step is for the RI to sign and complete your application.
What are the requirements for a temporary student pilot certificate?
Besides meeting with a Certified Flight Instructor who will ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements described above, you must be at least 14 years old and have been successfully vetted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to qualify for a temporary student pilot certificate.
While you can still apply for a certificate if you are within 90 days before your fourteenth birthday through IACRA, the certificate will not be made available until you are 14, and you will not be able to print it from the online console.
How long does it take for the temporary certificate to be issued?
Once you have applied, it should take no longer than a week for a temporary certificate to be issued and be available to print.
How long is the certificate good for?
A temporary student pilot certificate is valid for up to 120 days once it has been issued. This should leave sufficient time for the permanent certificate to arrive.
Can a student pilot solo with a temporary certificate?
Yes, a student pilot is eligible for solo flight as long as a temporary student pilot certificate has been issued and printed.
How can I print my temporary student pilot certificate?
Once you have been vetted, you will receive an email to inform you that your temporary student pilot certificate is ready to print. All you have to do is log into IACRA and print the certificate from your Application Console.
